Homestead Life: October 2023

We had an unbelievably long and beautiful fall in Colorado this year. The growing season came to an end in September, but the warmth and golden-red leaves lingered throughout October.

Once the garden is put to rest, the focus changes to structural projects that must be completed before winter sets in.

With that in mind, Matt spent several weeks re-roofing our house.

We were able to stretch a small budget and buy a 35 acre with a small hunting cabin on it several years ago by being willing to make tradeoffs. We are so grateful for our magical piece of land, and are slowly making our way towards a fully normal and functional home.

For two years we cooked outside on a camping stove, but thank goodness we now have a full kitchen with an indoor stove and oven. And thanks to Matt’s hard work we now have a new, leak-free roof.

We’re also blessed to have family nearby. And there is truly nothing more heartwarming than getting all the kids, nieces, and nephews together for a good ol’ fashioned, country good time.

In between caring for chickens, checking on goats, fixing the roof, and generally wrangling a bunch of wild kids, we also had a fantastic small-town Halloween.

And that’s a wrap on this random and rambling update. May you feel joy and hope as time marches on to the new year.
